OUR JOURNEY
The Story of Vista
How It All Started
Vista Community Church began in 1994 as the long-standing vision of Pastor Jim Barton, fueled by his evangelistic heart for the Mt. Vista area and the new WSU Vancouver campus. What started as an informal gathering in Jim and his wife Claudette’s home quickly outgrew their living room, leading to our official launch on Easter Sunday, 1995, at Pleasant Valley Elementary.
The early years were defined by remarkable stories of grace—including the school’s own janitor coming to Christ—and the growth of Jim’s Living Free Counseling ministry. Many who found freedom from addiction through his counseling became the foundational members of the Vista family.
As the congregation expanded, so did our footprint. After a season in a remodeled pizza restaurant, the Lord miraculously provided our current facility. Despite competing offers, the selling church felt a divine conviction that the building belonged to Vista.
Calling Clyde Cooper
Following Pastor Jim’s impactful ministry, Pastor Clyde Cooper stepped into the role of Lead Pastor at Vista in 2003, embarking on a remarkable 18-year tenure defined by steadfast devotion and spiritual depth. Known for his commitment to the "whole counsel of God," Clyde led the congregation through a verse-by-verse journey of the Scriptures, ensuring the flock was grounded in biblical truth. His ministry was characterized by a quiet, faithful presence and a genuine heart for pastoring, weathering seasons of change with grace and wisdom.
Upon his retirement in early 2021, Clyde left behind a legacy of integrity and a church family deeply rooted in the Word. Vista prayerfully called together a Pastoral Search Committee and trusted that God's good plan would soon be made known.

After the faithful retirement of Pastor Clyde Cooper, the Lord graciously led Vista to call Thomas Karrer as Lead Pastor in September 2021. Thomas, along with his wife Solé and their sons—Nicholas, Gideon, Judah, and Hezekiah—came to Vista having previously labored in the joy & challenge of planting a Spanish-speaking church in Vancouver, Washington. From the very beginning, it was evident that God was writing a story far bigger than any of them could have imagined.
God's Evident Grace
On their second weekend at Vista, a small but memorable moment captured both the need and the opportunity before them: the Karrer boys were the only children in the Kids Ministry, as the only other two kids who had been in there had just graduated into Youth Group. What could have felt discouraging instead became a catalyst for faith! As a family, they brought this before the Lord in prayer, asking Him to raise up and bring more families with children into the life of the church. In a beautiful and immediate display of God’s kindness, He answered that prayer the very next week by bringing two new families with children. And He has not stopped.
What we are witnessing is not merely numerical growth, but a deepening spiritual vitality. The Word of God is being preached, lives are being changed, and Christ is being treasured more and more among His people. There's a growing sense of unity, purpose, and joy as the body is built up in love. Our greater vision is that God would continue to use Vista not only to grow, but to go—to raise up leaders, send out workers, and plant new churches for the advance of His gospel locally and globally. To God be the glory for all that He has done, is doing, and will do!

Where We're Headed!
We believe the best chapters of our story are still being written. As we look to the future, our vision is rooted in a simple hope: to see more lives transformed by the Gospel and more people finding a home in our church family.
Here is what we are preparing for in this next season:
- Strengthening Our Leadership: Healthy growth starts with healthy leadership. We are excited to be appointing new ministry leaders—men and women dedicated to caring for our congregation, stewarding our resources, and ensuring that every member of our church is known, loved, and supported.
- Deepening Our Roots: Faith is meant to be lived in community. We are launching new groups for spiritual growth designed to help you dive deeper into Scripture and build lasting friendships. Whether you’re a lifelong believer or just starting to ask questions, there’s a circle waiting for you.
- A Gospel That Goes Out: Our mission doesn't stop at our front doors. We are re-energizing our commitment to outreach, finding creative and compassionate ways to share the hope of Jesus with our city and beyond. We aren't just building a bigger church; we’re seeking to be a bigger blessing to our community.
The future is bright, and there is a place in it for you!
Whether you are looking for a place to learn, a place to grow, a place to serve, or a place to heal, we invite you to come and see what God is doing at Vista.
